Platform: Mac OS X

Review by Frederick Barton (Cybersecurity Editor)

on 17 Sep 2014

Mac OS X makes numerous operations much easier for the end user, except for ones that involve security or the Mac's stability. This is why its default firewall is usually configured through the terminal, by experienced users. IceFloor can make the Mac OS X firewall more accessible and easier to control. It provides a graphical user interface, from which you can block specific elements, set up complex rules and much more.

IceFloor works straight out of the box, which means that you only need to extract and run a file, just like with any other Mac OS X application. When launched for the first time, IceFloor will take you through a tour of its core functionality. The controls on the user interface are neatly organized on several tabs. Each time you run the application, you will be greeted by the Help tab, from where you can run a configuration wizard, which makes it much easier to establish the initial firewall rules.

The application allows you to decide what components are allowed to send or receive data over the Internet. What's more, you can organize them in separate address groups, to make everything more tidy. You can populate whitelists and blacklists with predefined components, like essential system services, Apple file sharing and many other services. What's more, IceFloor comes with general presets, for different protection types, which relieve you from various numerous manual settings.

There are many other features to explore on IceFloor's interface, including controls for hidden services, custom rules, or connection monitors for apps, hosts and sockets. The best part is that everything is quite easy to operate. Of course, you need some basic knowledge about firewalls and how they work, but rather than typing commands in the terminal, you can do everything just by clicking buttons or dragging sliders.

Pros

You may control the Mac OS X firewall through a graphical user interface. The application provides numerous controls, which are well organized and easy to spot. Also, IceFloor is offered free of charge and you can have it up and running in no time.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to speak of. IceFloor gives you full control over your Mac's firewall and it enables you to configure it in a comfortable and elegant manner.
